CHAPWANI PRIVATE ISLAND (half day trip)
Also called Grave Island, This is a short trip from Stone Town, which can be done easily, even by beginners. About 3 km from the Mercury’s Restaurant, it is a small island with an old cemetery of the early 20th century, containing the graves of British and German Sailors. It also hosts a large colony of bats, which visit Zanzibar at night but sleep during the day in the trees of the island.
Chapwani Island has a sandy beach on the side facing Stone Town and a rocky shore on the other side with amazing rock formations. If the tide is low, the trip can be combined with a visit to a small sandbank, about two hundred metres east of Chapwani Island or a short trip to the mangroves north of the Port.
